When I first started reading the Road, I was utterly bored. There was no real dialogue or hint that something interesting would happen soon. However, I began to notice the use of Cormac McCarthy’s language. In a weird sense, his prose went along with the setting so elaborately. Not even in the way that the writing was “dark” or “sad”, but he managed to write so beautifully in a way that didn’t distract from the theme of the story.
The main man of the story often annoyed me with his actions. The boy seemed to be his “better half” in a way. The contrast between both their attitudes and beliefs was evident and added to the intensity the the story. I really enjoyed reading this book, but the ending was random and I hated it. It didn’t make sense to me. I just had to use my imagination. It was a pretty sad story with no closure whatsoever, but McCarthy managed to bring something different into my imagination. For the most part, The Road is very well written and full of depth.
